Dubai to be home to ‘world’s largest airport’
Dubai’s Al Maktoum International Airport aims to become the world’s largest airport by 2050
Dubai is set to achieve another remarkable feat in the world of aviation.
Al Maktoum International Airport, also referred to as Dubai World Central (DWC), is on track to become the largest airport once its construction is completed.
Al Maktoum International Airport is located at the heart of Dubai South, which is a residential, commercial and logistics development.
Dubai South, the urban master developer behind the project, has expressed its enthusiasm for Al Maktoum International Airport’s future.
Via Twitter, they shared their vision, stating, “#DubaiSouth will be home to the world’s largest airport once complete, and a multi-modal transport infrastructure linking air, land, and sea. Along with the advantages of a business-friendly free zone, it will also provide a diverse range of residential options.”

Launched in 2010 for cargo operations and expanded to include passenger services in 2013, Dubai World Central (DWC) is a development with a staggering value of AED 120 billion ($33 billion).
Its goal is to become the largest airport globally by 2050, with the ability to handle up to 255 million passengers every year.
The initial phase, scheduled for completion by 2030, will substantially enhance the airport’s capacity, allowing it to handle 130 million passengers each year.
The development of the Al Maktoum International Airport project faced a setback due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, the decision to resume the project has been driven by the revival in air traffic numbers, as demonstrated by Dubai International Airport recording 66.1 million passengers in 2022.
Covering an expansive area of 56 square kilometers, this ambitious project is going to deliver a significant boost to Dubai’s already thriving economy.
